چکیده

where ai(t) = Pi + εQi cos2t, where Pi,Qi and ε are given constants, and where it is assumed that when ε=0 this system exhibits a pair of linearly independent solutions of period 2π . Since the driver cos2t has period π , we have the ingredients for a 2:1 subharmonic resonance which typically results in a tongue of instability involving unbounded solutions when ε >0. We present conditions on the coefficients Pi,Qi such that the expected instability does not occur, i.e., the tongue of instability has disappeared. ©2015 L&H Scientific Publishing, LLC. Geometry of resonance tongues

Resonance tongues arise in bifurcations of discrete or continuous dynamical systems undergoing bifurcations of a fixed point or an equilibrium satisfying certain resonance conditions. They occur in several different contexts, depending, for example, on whether the dynamics is dissipative, conservative, or reversible. Generally, resonance tongues are domains in parameter space, with periodic dyn...

Shrinking Point Bifurcations of Resonance Tongues for Piecewise-Smooth, Continuous Maps

Resonance tongues are mode-locking regions of parameter space in which stable periodic solutions occur; they commonly occur, for example, near Neimark-Sacker bifurcations. For piecewise-smooth, continuous maps these tongues typically have a distinctive lens-chain (or sausage) shape in two-parameter bifurcation diagrams. We give a symbolic description of a class of “rotational” periodic solution...

The geometry of resonance tongues: a singularity theory approach

Resonance tongues and their boundaries are studied for nondegenerate and (certain) degenerate Hopf bifurcations of maps using singularity theory methods of equivariant contact equivalence and universal unfoldings. We recover the standard theory of tongues (the nondegenerate case) in a straightforward way and we find certain surprises in the tongue boundary structure when degeneracies are presen...

Folding tori and Chenciner bubbles in an ENSO model with delayed feedback

We consider the sudden disappearance of stable invariant tori in a delay differential equation (DDE) model of the coupled El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) system. This phenomenon can be explained by the folding of invariant tori and their resonance tongues, which are associated with bifurcation structures referred to as Chenciner bubbles. We identify and analyse a Chenciner bubble and show h...

Global Parametrization and Computation of Resonance Surfaces for Periodically Forced Oscillators

Periodically forced planar oscillators are typically studied by varying the two parameters of forcing amplitude and forcing frequency. Such differential equations can be reduced via stroboscopic sampling to a two-parameter family of diffeomorphisms of the plane. A bifurcation analysis of this family almost always includes a study of the birth and death of periodic orbits. For low forcing amplit...
